On Saturday Connor Green had the opportunity to participate in the OHSAA division 1 regional championship meet at Troy. All of the runners in this meet qualified the weekend before at one of the district meets in Cedarville or VOA park. The boys race consisted of runners from 17 teams plus individual qualifiers for a total of 131 runners. The day was beautiful and the racing conditions were as good as anyone could ask for and the runners responded.
The race took off quickly with a large breakaway group of around 40 runners, including Connor coming through the first mile marker in just under 5 minutes. As the runners made their second loop along the river the lead group started to string out and Connor passed by the two mile marker in 41st place with a large group of runners in front of him. Making their way up and over the levee Connor started to make a push and with about half a mile left had moved up into 36th place. As the race continued on top of the levee and then down and into the homestretch Connor gave everything he had moving up into 33rd place as he crossed the finish line.
With only runners finishing in the top 20 advancing to the state meet Connor’s high school cross country career ended with a valiant effort. After overcoming a midseason injury that required a walking boot for 3 weeks, he ran a season best time of 16:22. Connor is one of only two athletes in Franklin Cross Country history to have qualified for 3 consecutive regional championships. He had an amazing career here and will be greatly missed next season. Congratulations to all the cross country runners and other fall athletes on great seasons.
